A unidirectional blocking valve usually will stop flow in one direction when engaged, functioning as a check valve. A bidirectional blocking valve usually is a valve that stops flow in both directions when engaged. I can not give any guidance on application suitability, except that pilot line connections can be more complicated for bidirectional blocking valves.
